AS one of the world's most adored athletes, "Sexy" Alexei Nemov won 12 Olympic medals - six of them gold - in a career that spanned three Olympics. Last week in Sydney, the Russian gymnast paid homage to one career and welcomed a new one.
In the city for his new role as choreographer and coach for the gymnastic elements of The Imperial Ice Stars' Swan Lake On Ice, which is now playing at Star City. Nemov took a day off from rehearsals to show his wife Galena the scene of his Olympic triumphs. Nemov, 30, took the Superdome by storm in 2000, winning six medals, and a legion of female fans.
The fact he'd been voted one of the 50 most beautiful men in the world, in the lead-up to the Games, was a natural showman, prone to backing up dazzling gymnastics displays with cheeky grins and a flash of his biceps, didn't hurt his popularity. "Aaah. that sexy stuff was a long time ago," he said, hugging Galena as he soaked up his first glimpse of the Sydney Olympic site.
"It's great to be able to bring my wife here. She was not able to watch me in Sydney, because she was pregnant in Russia with my son," Nemov said.
"Six years ago, I remember only getting off the bus and walking into the venue. I didn't realise how beautiful the whole place was," he said.
