STARS of stage and screen gathered at the city’s plush Midland Hotel earlier today for the 25th annual M.E.N. Theatre Awards.

PERFORMERS came from as far away as Japan and Russia and even Fantasy land to entertain us in a special way - circus, opera, ice dancing and cinema-with-a-difference. The incomparable Circus Ronaldo wowed us at Platt Fields. Forkbeard Fantasy brought their own special riot of haunting high comedy to the Lowry with The Rise And Fall Of The House of Usherettes. From Tokyo came The Chichibu Mikado, sung in Japanese, to unexpectedly captivate the nation's enthusiasts at the annual Gilbert and Sullivan Festival at Buxton Opera House. But it was the electrifying Imperial Ice Stars who took the top award with their Swan Lake On Ice, a dazzling display of superlative ice-dancing skills. Philip Radcliffe.
