Kick butt ice ballet on way

30 Jun 10 - Gold Coast Bulletin, Australia -

THE Russian star of Swan Lake on Ice has promised to deliver a 'kick-arse Odette' when the show glides into Australia in August. Former world champion ice skater Olga Sharutenko plays the role of Odette, a swan who turns into a beautiful girl and falls in love with a prince.

She says her Odette will be a departure from the tragic, cursed heroine usually portrayed in one of the world's best known and loved ballets. ''(I have been) called 'kick-arse Odette' because I am strong,'' she said in Christchurch, New Zealand, yesterday ahead of the opening night of its twoyear world tour. ''She is fighting, she is deciding things for herself . . . she tries to really fight for herself and her life.''

The role also requires physical strength from the petite skater. In one scene Sharutenko flies above the stage in a harness strapped around her waist and legs in a move she said had left her red, raw and bruised. ''I've got bruises, marks - it's just painful,'' she said. ''But the feeling of flying takes over.''

The Imperial Ice Stars last visited Australia in 2008 when they performed Cinderella on Ice. The two-year tour kicks off in Christchurch today before travelling to Wellington and Auckland and then crossing the Tasman to Melbourne from August 3, Perth from August 13, Sydney from August 27 and Canberra from September 8. They then head to the UK and Europe.
