Swan Lake on Ice - Wales Millenium Centre

28 Oct 10 - South Wales Argus - Jessica Best

Swan Lake on Ice opened to a full theatre at the Wales Millennium Centre on Tuesday night, and the Imperial Ice Skate Stars' return to the Cardiff venue did not disappoint.

The ice gave the well known story of Prince Siegfried's search for love with Swan-Maiden Odette a fluidity it can never quite achieve with ballet, and the audience was treated to a stunning spectacle of beautiful skating and clever trickery.

Act one saw the largely Russian and Ukrainian cast in the palace courtyard as The Queen tells Prince Siegfi•ied he must choose a wife. The stand out performance here came from the Prince's confidante Benno, skated by Ruslan Novoseltsev, whose slapstick style and skilled movement had the audience in awe and giggles.

Technical wizardry on stage included fake snow falling from the roof, and the evil Count Von Rothbart skating in a ring of fire on the ice. Both effects were magical.

The rhythm of the second half was interrupted briefly when the show was stopped because of a technical issue, but the skaters lost none of their energy and closed the show with a 'tricks' section, showing off the best of their talent and bringing the audience to its feet in a standing ovation.
