Swan Lake on Ice at the Bord Gais Energy Theatre, Dublin

05 Mar 13 - - Declan Leavy

Typically, I’m not a fan of the ballet. Give me a good old high-camp musical and I’m happy as a pig in the proverbial, but the ballet simply doesn’t do it for me. However, when I heard that Swan Lake was coming to Dublin’s Bord Gais Energy Theatre, with an icy twist, I was intrigued.

Swan Lake on Ice is a big-budget production from the Moscow-based Imperial Ice Stars – 26 World, European and National Championship skaters, who between them hold more than 250 competition medals.

Inspired by the iconic ballet, and using Tchaikovsky’s orchestral score, Swan Lake on lce tells the love story of Prince Siegfried and Odette, a swan-girl cursed by the evil Baron Von Rothbart. Disney on Ice this most certainly is not. The ice dancing is stunning, the aerial flying sequences are breath-taking, and the lighting, set and costumes are lavish.

It’s clear from the offset that the cast are all former champions; hardly taking a step wrong as they spin, cartwheel, backflip and dance their way through a gruelling two hours of intricate moves and manoeuvres… all on ice!

I can’t recommend this more. If you have seen the ballet then you will love this icy take on a classic. If you haven’t then you will be blown away by the music, the set and the performances – there’s even a little tribute to Riverdance thrown in for good measure.

Be sure to stick around until the very end for a spectacular finale!

Running at the Bord Gais Energy Theatre until Saturday March 9th. Tickets from €20.
